Definitions

According to the American Dental Association (ADA): Dental emergencies are potentially life threatening. Immediate treatments are recommended to stop bleeding, alleviate severe pain and infection.

Pain is not always involved with dental emergencies, although it is a common signal that an evaluation is warranted. Pain often originates from tooth, but the source of the pain could also be associated with surrounding tissues or be referred from other nearby anatomies, such as muscles, sinuses, or the underlying nerves.
Fractures (dental trauma) can occur anywhere on the tooth or to the surrounding bone, depending on the site and extent of fracture the treatment options will vary. Dental restoration falling out or fracturing can also be dental emergencies, as proper functions may be compromised in terms of aesthetics, eating and talking. All dental emergencies should be treated by a dental health professional.
